Chelina Manuhutu: Queen of Groove

Friday, Sep 29, 2023

One of the most exciting DJ / producers in the tech house scene today, Chelina Manuhutu is the queen of the groove and has become a firm Colony favourite with her signature blend of loopy, bass-led house.

Born in The Netherlands to a Dutch mother and Indonesian Father, Chelina grew up in an extremely musical household. Her mother was a ballet dancer, and her father was the frontman of respected Latin band Massada.

Her older brother caught the DJ bug first, and Chelina, inspired by watching him on the turntables, soon learnt how to mix and began developing her own record collection. Despite this early introduction to music, her professional life would take a different path and she would work as a model for many years.

Throughout her modelling career, she kept her passion for electronic music, continuing to DJ and going to see her inspirations, such as Carl Cox, at every opportunity. Tragically, Chelina would be involved in a serious accident that put her in hospital for two weeks.

During this period, she had a lot of time to contemplate what direction she wanted her life to take and how quickly the path laid out before you can change. She resolved to follow her original passion and pursue music full time. Her resolve was so robust that she began producing music from her hospital bed.

One year after her accident, Chelina debuted her first official release, “Ochibaba” a collab with her friend, Junior Rogers. Chelina moved to Ibiza to place herself in the heart of electronic music and soon began to hold down residencies on the island. Her relationship with Ibiza has been an enduring one, and she still lives on the island to this day.

Chelina built her DJ career step-by-step. The foundation was summers in Ibiza, and each winter, embarking on a demanding touring schedule, taking in every prestigious club and festival on the planet.

After focusing on building her DJ career, in 2018, Chelina dropped her second official release, “Fantastic Job” , a collab with Spanish producer Fran Ares. This kicked off a 5-year run of well-received releases across some of the most innovative labels in underground electronic music.

2021 saw Chelina remix fellow ANTS resident Francisco Allendes on his track “Always Around” for elrow music. The following year, she tapped Colony favourites Solardo to release her track “All On You” on their Sola label.

The same year, Chelina joined Belgian underground label Hot Fuss to release the club-focused “You’re So Fine”. An imprint she returned to earlier this year with “Freakiness”.

Also in 2023 she would team with Adam Beyer’s legendary techno label, Drumcode, to release her biggest track to date, the dancefloor weapon “Amsterdam Rave''. A meditation on her early years in the Dutch scene, the track channels the unrelenting energy of a warehouse rave.

Chelina has become an artist with a unique sound and an undeniable skill behind the decks. Her groove-focused, bass-heavy brand of tech house have made her a firm favourite of the ANTS family, and she has wowed The Colony on dANTSfloors across the globe from Miami to Ibiza.

Chelina joins us at Ushuaïa Ibiza for the ANTS 10 YEARS STRONG Closing Party, where she will go B2B with fellow ANTS resident SYREETA. They’ll be joined by Andrea Oliva B2B Paco Osuna, Nic Fanciulli B2B Eddy M and many more.
